The Screenplay Basics

So, you want to write screenplays. Cool. There really are no rules to the process, but there are lots of theories. And there are certainly elements readers will be looking for and when I say readers I mean anyone who has the power to toss your script in the can — script readers, producers, executives, directors, agents, actors, etc. I’ll share a few of tidbits I’ve collected and used, but I’m no guru. This is simply what I did to get my foot in the door. If you’ve had some success, ignore this. It’ll bore you. But if you’re just getting started, if you’re considering the long road of tackling a screenplay, then maybe this will be helpful.
Syd Field has written some excellent books on the basics. You can pick them up at any local bookstore or a quick stop at Amazon.com. There are also some great workshops out there. Robert McKee teaches a great class on Story Structure. I’ve gone to a couple of two-day workshops with David Freeman. And there are others. If you’re just getting started you should check them out. I did and I wouldn’t be recommending them if I hadn’t walked away with some piece of the puzzle.
And understanding the world of the screenplay is a bit like putting a puzzle together. Everyone’s puzzle is different and you never know where you’re going to find that next piece.

Hollywood Hates Movies

When I first moved to LA I loved all movies. I mean, why wouldn’t I? I was from Kentucky. A member of the real world. Naïve I guess. I went to movies to be entertained, for the enjoyment, nothing else. My car payment depended very little on Independence Day’s weekend gross. If my rent was late, I certainly couldn’t blame Ishtar. I went to, rented and purchased movies because I enjoyed them. All of them. The good ones. The bad ones. I simply loved movies. Truth is, I think most people do. But a trip West on the I-10 changed all that.

The Workout

Mel and I both have trainers and they are kicking our butts. Mel’s riding horses a couple of times a week and Dean and I are doing the Racquetball.
The Sci-Fi meeting got pushed to the 20th of next month. That might be a mistake. Putting a call into Mike. If the Guild goes on strike then it might be best to get as many steps on this thing done before that happens. I’m not pleased with how the guild is handling this. They should have asked for a year extension like the Actors did. If we don’t reach an agreement now and strike then we’ll have to sit for a year waiting for the Actors and directors to join us. Jeesh.

The Demonik Meeting

Meeting went good. Terrence and Suzanne had good notes which addressed many of my own concerns about translating this from video game to movie.
Also found out that Majesco has come on board. I didn’t get any details but I think they’ve already started some of the game development. This is great news for the feature pitch. The fact that a gaming company is now on board will do wonders at the pitches.
The pitches will be pushed back until after E3 which doesn’t happen until the second week of next month.

Brian the trainer

He’s killing me. I can barely move.
Dean and I have started playing racquetball again. We have two courts here at the complex and they are always open during the day. My Sci-Fi meeting is at the end of the week so a little Racquetball can’t hurt.
Oh and we’ve also grabbed a new online game. City of Heroes. It’s awesome. Dean, Mel and I could really get lost in this. Looks like all those house purchases in Dark Age might go to waste.
Tomorrow I’m going in to meet with Lori and Woo’s movie peeps about my Demonik feature take.
