Dean Riesner wrote in the movie Starman, “Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst.”
I wish that were true of everyone.
A friend of mine, a writer on “Arrested Development” told me one time that you can poke fun at a person and he or she will most likely laugh at themselves. You can poke fun at their religion, even their race and most will find the humor but once you have entered politics you will be on shaky, even unforgivable ground.
So, amazingly true.
I believe we went to Iraq for many reasons. I believe intelligence led our government (both Republican and Democrat alike) to see Iraq as a future threat. I believe we went there for oil. I believe we went there to stimulate an economy. I believe we went there to free an abused people.
And it has been anything but a smooth process. We have not found weapons of mass destruction. Oil prices have gone up despite our being there. The economy still suffers. And the nation we wanted to free is now plagued with terrorism.
And in a time when we as a nation should be standing together dissension and propaganda and conspiracy rules the airwaves. It disgusts me.
I love my country. I am proud to be an American. I love my country through the good times and the bad. I loved my country when Clinton was in the White house. I love my country now with Bush as our leader. And I’ll love my country if Kerry becomes Commander-in-Chief.
Oh, I know we have our flaws. Everyone I know has a plethora of flaws. I don’t love my wife any less because of her flaws. I don’t love my country any less because of its flaws.
Yes, I love my country. I love my wife. I love my friends.
I would die for my country. I would die for my wife. I would lay down my life for my friends.
